In 2018, I published The Drinking Woman’s Diet and I’ve been banging on about wine and wellness ever since. But now the conversation has changed and for the wine industry, not for the better. You can’t open a newspaper or scroll through social media without an article or report about the dangers of alcohol consumption.

If you dine in and around Bordeaux, the mineral water may come to your table in a bottle that looks just a Bordeaux wine bottle; straight shoulders, clear glass (sometimes plastic) and in red or white – sorry red or blue – for sparkling or still.

Wine is made from grapes, so it must be vegan right? Or is it? Today’s guest post from Sally Evans owner wine maker at Château George 7 looks at what exactly makes a wine vegan. Sally is vegetarian, not vegan but she takes us through her wine making choices to make Château George 7 wines accessible to as many wine lovers as possible. Let me hand over to Sally.

You probably know of Sally Evans or have read about her on a previous blogpost. She’s one of my Bordeaux heroines, a shining example of mid-life reinvention and how you can turn a passion into a successful project.

No not another post about Sauternes. On the contrary, as Sauternes producers are at pains to explain why their wines should not be limited to the dessert trolly, Bordeaux red wine producers seem keen to serve their wines with something sweet.

Tomorrow is National Women in Wine Day in the USA. Created as a social initiative by the co-founders of Papapietro Perry Winery in California it has the laudable aim of creating a scholarship fund to help with education for women in, or wanting to enter, the wine industry.

I’m thrilled to be able to include Clare Tooley in our women, wine and wellness profiles. Clare has contributed to this blog in the past, including a prescient article about Napa before she knew she would be living there, the challenges of Bordeaux primeur from her previous life in Bordeaux and notes from the beginning of her MW journey.

I often get asked what makes a great Bordeaux, so, on a trip to Champagne, with UK Champagne Ambassador 2010 and Champagne specialist Laura Clay, it was my turn to ask the questions.

A common complaint from guests on wine tours is you just don’t get enough vegetables in French restaurants. I disagree, the French eat seasonal and local, visit Bordeaux in spring and every restaurant will be serving you asparagus.

Is selling alcohol sustainable? This is a tricky subject, especially for my audience of wine drinkers and producers. I’m not talking about economics; I’ve touched on that in a previous post – but the ethical and moral case for or against selling a drug – or a poison – depending upon who you listen to.

If you can’t get to Bordeaux right now and are mourning a planned (but hopefully rescheduled) Bordeaux wine tour, here are a few suggestions for romantic Bordeaux wines to open on Valentines Day.

Tradition has it Bordeaux wines are best serve with food, but that does not mean it has to be a formal dinner or lunch. To prove the point Chateaux in Bordeaux are now thinking outside the box and offering visitors the chance to taste their wines in a more relaxed atmosphere.

Just when you have made all your new resolutions to eat and drink wisely after the festive season’s excess the French have another excuse for over indulgence : La Galette des Rois.

Nibbles are perfect for the festive season. If serving dinner afterwards, I tend to do 'heavy nibbles' and skip the starter so that people get a chance to mingle before sitting down. And remember, it is so much better to eat something with a glass of wine.

Can you make wine on a subtropical island? Back in Mauritius I find out that yes you can.

Dry January may be behind us but the ‘trend’ for no and lo alcohol (NoLo) rumbles on. 0% beers are well intrenched into most markets and wine is making progress. Unsurprising then that Bordeaux, the biggest fine wine region in France is joining the party.
